The OG&E Google Scam
Oklahoma City is the only metro in our series where scammers attacked through search engine trust rather than caller ID spoofing.
In May 2025, OG&E warned customers that fraudulent phone numbers appeared in Google search results for queries like "OG&E bill payment." Customers who searched for OG&E's payment line and called the number shown were connected to scammers who collected their bill payments. This attack:
- Bypasses caller ID screening entirely (the victim initiates the call)
- Exploits the trust that Google search results carry
- Is not captured in standard FTC phone complaint categories
OG&E directed customers to use only numbers from their official website or bill statements. Energy/utility scams statewide total 1,048 complaints at 62.7% robocall rate.
